Canoe Trip Down the Housatonic River
Sunday, July 20, 2008 at 10:07AM Yesterday we went canoeing down the Housatonic river. It was supposed to be a rafting trip but the river level was too low so they brought us up to Fall Village and we went down the flat part of the river above the dam in a canoe. The trip was 6 miles and took 2 1/2 hours. Thelma and I paddled our arms off and the boys had a turn as well. It was quite hot but it was great fun. We lagged behind and for long stretches had the river to ourselves. It was pretty deep most of the way. The most memorable part was when Thelma told us there was a rock at about the same time we struck this giant boulder submerged in the water. A quick push of the paddle against the rock and we were on our way! After we landed near the dam we were waiting for the van so we walked around below the dam and saw some beautiful scenery and falls. The rocks along that stretch of the river are all smoothly carved out like downstream at Bulls Bridge. It was a great experience for us all and we will certainly do it again sometime.
